Community Engagement Coordinator

Position Details

The Berrien County Conservation District (BCCD) helps landowners voluntarily manage their land in ways that improve resource value and water quality. To accomplish this, we engage with local, state and federal agencies, businesses, like organizations and individuals to promote ecological awareness and implement conservation practices in the county. BCCD is a local unit of government, IRS 170(c)(1), and serves Berrien County through stewardship of natural resources. Historically, the District is funded by several sources - state, federal, and local grants, seedling sales, services for hire, and donations.

 

SCOPE AND PURPOSE:

The position of the Community Engagement Coordinator is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in community engagement on the behalf of this organization. The person in this position primarily coordinates outreach, marketing, and environmental projects. They also support BCCD’s District Manager and staff with administrative tasks when necessary and coverage of office hours. This employee serves the district by implementing programming, and by supporting BCCD’s mission through varying methods of promotion including social media and website management, written and verbal public relations, and in-person efforts. They will maintain strong relationships with the public and other organizations.

 

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

 

Increasing community awareness

  • Creates compelling written and visual content for social media, website, email blasts, and press releases, which includes text, photos and video.

  • Graphic design and production of seasonal newsletters, seedling catalogs, the annual report, and other print publications.

 

Special Project Management

  • Seek out projects that will work within our mission and find grants that will support the project; for example a stream cleanup or a tire collection.

  • Work with some of our existing grant projects to support the completion of those grants-currently a riparian restoration project and stream monitoring.

Other:

  • Interact with members of the public.

  • Provide general support for fundraising efforts.

  • Support the seedling sale, native plant sale, field day, workshops, and other events.

  • Represent the District at community events, sometimes partnering with neighboring organizations for collaborative outreach efforts.

  • Attend local and regional organization and/or agency meetings, including township meetings, representing BCCD, as assigned.

  • Work with volunteers.

  • Other duties as assigned by the manager.

 

Qualifications:

  • An Associates degree or higher in communications, environmental science, natural resources, agriculture, or related field preferred

  • Preferred Experience: Two years of work experience or related education demonstrating proficiency in the following skills: community outreach, graphic design, natural resources management, or environmental education.

  • Computer efficiency and use of  software: Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, Google for Business, Mail Chimp, Canva, social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), and POS systems (Square and PayPal).

  • Be comfortable in website management

  • Strong organizational and management skills

  • U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien

  • Great phone skills; able to represent the district in a professional manner

  • Special consideration will be given to an applicant with grant writing experience

  • Ability to pass a background check

  • Maintains valid drivers license

On occasion, work will be required at an off-site location. Use of a personal vehicle is required to perform duties (mileage will be reimbursed). This is a part time 20-30 hours per week position with significant flexibility due to some evening and weekend activities. This is a hybrid position. Targeted rate of pay is $18 per hour commensurate with experience.  Benefits include paid time off including annual leave, sick leave, and holidays.
