White Oak (Quercus Alba): The White Oak is where the phrase “Might Oak” came from. It is a slow-growing, long-lived tree that requires little maintenance. It is a medium to large tree that can grow to be 50 to 80 feet in height. It is known for its broad, round head and massive wide horizontal far spreading branches so it needs plenty of room to mature properly. The bark of the tree is light gray or white and thick. The leaves are bright green and then turn brownish purple in autumn. The winter buds are a dark reddish brown. The tree has dense foliage that is bluish-green to a reddish-brown in the fall. The tree displays spring flowers in May and June that are red and then turns silvery until the summer when they turn blue-green and then burgundy in the fall. The best growth is made on deep, rich, well-drained soils and sun to partial shade. It is used for furniture, flooring, interior trim, veneer, wine casks, and barrels. |
